Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport has expanded its work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on how the city’s streets and public spaces function.
The agreement, reported on 30 September, builds on collaboration begun in 2024. Two proofs of concept are nearing completion: one estimates vehicle emissions from dashcam footage, while the other examines pedestrians’ exposure to traffic emissions.
Further proposed work includes using AI to inform tree planting and studying changes to urban lighting.
Look beyond the apartment itself
For someone choosing a neighbourhood, shade, walking conditions and traffic exposure deserve attention alongside the home’s layout. This research addresses those everyday conditions, although it does not announce completed street improvements or guarantee changes in a particular community.
The practical question is which findings become funded, location-specific work. Until then, buyers should assess the street as it exists today rather than price in a proposed improvement.
